It has been a looonnng time since I lived in an apartment building.
When I moved out of the last one in 1991, I swore I would never live in an apartment that had another apartment above it.
Well, that stuck for 15 years..
the bad:
- noisy elevators
- the woman upstairs that walks around with high heeled shoes on
- echo-y hallway and courtyard conversations
the good:
- the neighbors sometimes come over for no special reason, just to chat and see how we are doing.
- laundry downstairs that will wash, dry and fold a big pile of laundry for the equivalent of ~$2.50
- cafeteria/snack bar downstairs. Cheap passable food. Some days, it is a godsend.
- the concert pianist upstairs that practices during the day. I don’t know what he plays, but it is beautifully done.

That seems more like dorm life then apartment living. In my experience however it was loud heavy metal music instead of classical piano. Sometimes I miss that community atmosphere of living in a dorm. 🙂
Jack: Actually where we live is dorms on floors 3-6 and apartments 7-10. So it is kinda both. And we are digging it, at least for now.
I had a ‘high heel walker’ at my last place — I just imagined she was in fetish gear 😉 And, as long as the neighbors aren’t nuts, sounds like a good deal.

Do you guys get that benefit too (if something breaks, someone else fixes it)?
Jack: Oh yeah. They do everything. For instance: I didn’t like the desk chair. It is a dining room kind of chair, no wheels straight back thing. I mentioned it to someone off hand and hey said “Call Mr. Nabil, he will get you one you like”. I called, they said “A car will be buy around 4 with a new chair”. Sure enough, the doorbell rang and they brought in a brand new office chair.

there are times when I miss my condo. For example, about two weeks from now I’ll be knee deep in leaves raking, cursing and filling the chipper. But then again, it’s difficult to find a apt/condo with a 30×28 garage.
I am amazed at how well insulated my girlfriends apt is. It’s dead center of a large building and a relativley small windows/deck. I think she turns on the heat twice a year or so.
How’s the real estate market in Cairo? Go see the local Century 21 (or is it 22 now?) office and figure out if it makes sense to buy something and then sell it in two years. Maybe you can make a few LE on the deal?
